Miley Cyrus Had The World’s Biggest Single In 2023
‘Flowers’ racked up 2.7 billion streams – almost a billion more than the runner-up – and went #1 in 29 global markets.

After weeks of crunching numbers, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) have unveiled the list of the biggest songs released around the world in 2023 – and perhaps surprisingly, Miley Cyrus topped the list by a long mile.
Cyrus’ single Flowers – which she released last January as the lead single for her eighth studio album, Endless Summer Vacation – racked up a cumulative total of 2.7 billion streams across all digital formats (including paid subscription platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, ad-supported platforms like YouTube, and single-track downloads from storefronts like Amazon Music), and topped the charts in 29 global markets.
It’s also earned Cyrus an eye-watering 25 Platinum certificates across seven territories, including seven in Australia, and eight in Canada.
It marks the first time a US singer-songwriter has topped the IFPI Global Single Chart, and comes with the bonus of having Cyrus bestowed with the IFPI Global Single Award for 2023.
In a press statement, Lewis Morrison – Director of Global Charts & Certifications at IFPI – said the organisation is “delighted” to have Cyrus taking out the award, praising Flowers for its “message of empowerment” and branding it “the definition of a truly global hit”.
“Congratulations to Miley and her team for this incredible achievement,” Morrison added. “It is also fantastic to see so many nationalities and genres represented in the IFPI Global Single Chart. It is a wonderful reflection of the wide range of extraordinary artists that – working in partnership with their record labels – are finding international success.”

The #2 spot on the IFPI Global Single Chart for 2023 went to Rema and Selena Gomez, whose collaborative single Calm Down drew in 1.89 billion streams. Close behind at #3 was SZA, bringing in 1.84 million streams at the hand of her SOS single Kill Bill. SZA will be touring Australia this April, but it could be a long while yet before Cyrus treats us to another visit Down Under.
