Later this month, a cohort of Australian rock, pop and indie icons – including the likes of Bernard Fanning, Ruby Fields and Ali Barter, plus members of Ball Park Music, Dune Rats, Kingswood, The Rubens, Grinspoon and more – will go head to head with industry professionals in the year’s most cutthroat golf tournament, all in the spirit of raising funds for some incredible charities.
The event, dubbed the MIM Cup (that acronym standing for Music Industry Masters), was officially launched last year ahead of Splendour In The Grass, where the artists’ team just narrowly lost to their industry overlords. This year’s edition will follow the same formula – it’s scheduled to go down at the Byron Bay Golf Club on Thursday July 20 (the day before Splendour kicks off), running from 12pm to 7pm. More info on the MIM Cup can be found here, but essentially, all you’ll need to do to make it into the event is donate.
All proceeds raised from this year’s tournament will be spread across three charities: the GO Foundation (who “create opportunities for Indigenous young people through the delivery of their holistic Scholarship Program, with a focus on culture and education”), Musicians Making A Difference (who “transform the lives of young people through music, inspiring them to make positive choices so they can find their place in the world”) and Hi Neighbour (who “are working toward a successful energy transformation, believing it's reasonable to expect a good job and a safe environment, for you and your neighbour”).
At last year’s inaugural MIM cup, $15,000 was raised for Music In Exile, CrewCare and the Ngunya Jargoon Indigenous Protected Area. By donating at this year’s, you’ll be able to enjoy all the festivities of the cup itself – you can watch the cation live from the ‘Party Zone’, join in on games and additional “activities” (we’re just as intrigued as you are), and party with Australia’s biggest and best artists at the clubhouse.
In a press statement, MIM Cup co-founder Sam said: “Golf always seemed inaccessible and a little exclusive to me growing up. I started playing at a cheap public course across the road a few years back and realised there was a really wonderful, diverse bunch of people playing there most days. I became more obsessed with the game itself and found that there were heaps of fellow music industry folks who shared my newfound passion which is how the initial discussion for the MIM Cup started.
“Golf is a good outlet to combat the demands of touring and also having great conversations whilst being immersed in nature on the course. We were blown away with the response from the inaugural event and the feedback from players, sponsors and wider industry was very encouraging, so we are very excited to do year two and hopefully raise a lot of money for the three organisations this year!”
