Twenty-two pubs in the Inner West of New South Wales have been added to the State Heritage Register, protecting them from redevelopment and maintaining the city’s pub and live music culture.

With the new heritage protections, venues such as the Annandale Hotel and the Duke of Enmore Hotel will have their exteriors protected, as well as bars and interiors, preventing their demolition. The protections will safeguard the venues for future generations.

The newly announced 22 venues added to the State Heritage Register will join 26 Inner West pubs that have already secured heritage protection.

“In recent years, we’ve seen long-standing pubs targeted by developers for conversion to office space or residential,” Byrne said. “These heritage listings will help to send a message that if you buy a long-standing pub in the Inner West, you should be prepared to operate it as a pub.”

Byrne added, “In our community, pubs have been a social hub for local residents for well over a century. Traditionally, many people have seen the bar at the local pub as an extension of their loungeroom.

“Our Inner West pub culture has been the breeding ground for some of Australia’s best and most famous musicians and performers, and we want to make sure this continues into the future.

“We are committed to preserving and nurturing the pubs of the Inner West and their unique heritage.”
