Songs Worth Streaming: Last Quokka - Cue

At this point, Last Quokka are as ingrained into Western Australia's punk scene as much as many of the venues they've played; venues that have hosted and cultivated punk audiences for years. Over the last half-decade, they've become a hallmark band of West Australian political punk, with a string of albums - four, becoming five with the addition of a new one later this year - showcasing their multi-dimensional, yet always-energetic sound and the hard-hitting and often-empowering lyricism that swells amongst it, something that's elevated further throughout their work in conjunction with the greater Perth live music community.

Throughout this time, their journey is something we've been incredibly privileged to watch (and report on), and as Last Quokka turn a new page and commence an exciting new chapter, we're stoked to continue the tradition going, as we premiere their returning single Cue today, ahead of its launch at Mojo's Bar on January 21st. Cue captures a lot of exciting new ground for Last Quokka, being a tease of their forthcoming fifth album due later in the year, while also showing how the band are changing in both sound and physical line-up, as they shake things up following the chaotic, cancelled-show-filled period of the last few years.

With that in mind, Cue feels like a reckoning new beginning for Last Quokka. It's musically charged by the well-loved punk backings that have been distinct to their work no matter what album you look at, but this time around, it's a little more polished and grand, as new members such as drummer Carlota Rivera and guitarist Justin Zanetic adding further layers into the mix. It's a little beefier compared to what we've heard in the past, but it still manages to come across refined and slick, while holding onto that rough-around-the-edges charm distinctive to Last Quokka.

As mentioned, Cue arrives ahead of a launch show at Mojo's Bar on January 21st, alongside Aborted Tortoise and Lonesome Dove (find more information on that show here). Furthermore, they've got a stack of dates lined up with Melbourne-based disco-punks Plaster Of Paris across the country later this year (stay tuned for more details), as well as more shows in support of their next album in the pipeline. There's a lot going on and lot coming up, but in the meantime, bask in Last Quokka's newfound glory as we premiere Cue below:
