How would you personally describe shoegaze music? I guess the common themes that occur in the broad title of shoegaze would be hushed vocals that are used more as an instrument than a story carrying device, and loud, affected, textured guitars in an indie pop-rock format.
How did you first discover shoegaze and what drew you in enough to actually perform it? I'm not sure when it first started filtering through, but I was a little late to the party. I think the biggest influence was through a friend in high school in the mid-'90s. His sister had an amazing CD collection.
What seminal album would you offer someone who knew nothing about shoegaze as an introduction and why? There'd have to be a few, because there are many blindingly different sounds within the genre, from mellow to abrasive. Slowdive — Souvlaki, Cocteau Twins — Heaven Or Las Vegas, Swervedriver — Raise, My Bloody Valentine — Loveless.

How's the camaraderie and size of the shoegaze scene in Melbourne? The one thing better than the music is the people. It's a really lovely, humble little community of amazing talents.
The tagline for Roogaze is "The scene that celebrates itself" — what will be the biggest cause for celebration on the night? That was a term used to knock the original British scene for everyone going to each other's gigs and some member swapping. Sounds like a pretty healthy scene to me. On this occasion, it'll be a big sendoff for Andre [Brett].
What time are you playing the festival? Lowtide are playing at 6.30pm.
