Like almost all of the artists we talk to, 2020 didn't exactly go to plan for Melbourne-based four-piece The Belair Lip Bombs. Prior to last year, the Frankston group were blossoming as a newcoming favourite to Melbourne's indie/rock worlds, sharing a self-titled debut EP in 2018 and another three-track release titled Songs To Do Your Laundry To the year later. They were ones to watch on the live stage too, supporting acts like Spacey Jane, Press Club and Tired Lion amongst shows of their own, where their dancing indie would come to life in front of crowds across the east coast.

2020 brought everything to a halt, however. The band's live shows dried up, but rather than sit around and twiddle their thumbs, The Belair Lip Bombs used the time for a bit of personal and musical exploration; exploring side projects and refocusing on their sound so that when normality began to return, The Belair Lip Bombs could return alongside it, showing off a dazzling and re-invigorated sound and image in the process of doing so.

Premiering on Pilerats today, Out Of Here previews the first taste of this re-energised The Belair Lip Bombs, marking their return with their first single in two years and with it, bringing a reminder of the talents and class of one of Victoria's most exciting newcoming bands. Out Of Here is a fun indie-pop tune through and though, with bright-eyed vocals and wind-swept guitar dancing amongst swaying percussion and bass; the end result being this light and summer-y jam that captures the best of the group and all their catchiness, on a level that feels perfect for them.

"It was recorded at the start of this year I think like a week after we wrote it. We wrote it in one night and we were sort of just like yep this is it, this is gonna be the start to a new era of lip bombs after so much radio silence," says frontwoman Maisie Everett, who you may also recognise as a founding member of Melbourne punk hot-shots CLAMM. "I reckon it’s a pretty good song. I just want to write catchy songs and I reckon this did a pretty good job of that. It has elements of some of our older stuff but just kind of...better?"

It's the perfect introduction to The Belair Lip Bombs if you haven't already been acquainted, and for everyone else, Out Of Here all but solidifies the group as forces worth watching in the year ahead, as the Lip Bombs train rejoins its tracks and starts moving forward into a bright future ahead.

Take a listen to the song below as it premieres on Pilerats today, and then make sure you catch the group launching the single at the Northcote Social Club, on July 29th - more information and tickets available here.

Hellooo there I’m Maisie I sing and play guitar in The Belair Lip Bombs

What’s your music like? What does it sound like? What kind of themes does it usually cover?

I’ve always found it hard to describe our ‘sound’ to be honest. Definitely not in an egocentric way but more so probably in a lack of musical knowledge way... I guess we fall under the category of indie rock. The main recurring theme throughout our music is probably love and relationships. Love is kind of epic and it’s a topic I guess everyone can relate to somehow. I sometimes beat myself up a bit and wish I would write about more eccentric topics but I guess I’m always instinctively drawn back to it... I can’t help it, I just love love baby.

What are your production and writing processes usually like?

Single guitar riff, band practice, entire song. That’s usually the order it goes in. It usually starts with a melody or a riff. A lot of the time I randomly get a little melody pop into my head and I have to just whip out voice memos and sing into my phone for 20 seconds. I’ve read that that’s a pretty common way to write. It usually happens when I’m in public and I get kind of awkward about it so I just pretend I’m on the phone to someone. A lot of the time I’ll listen to the recordings a few hours or days later and it‘ll just sound like gibberish, but also that’s how some of our best ideas have started

Can you tell us about your latest single, Out Of Here?

Out Of Here will be our first release in over 2 years. It was recorded at the start of this year I think like a week after we wrote it. We wrote it in one night and we were sort of just like yep this is it, this is gonna be the start to a new era of lip bombs after so much radio silence. I reckon it’s a pretty good song. I just want to write catchy songs and I reckon this did a pretty good job of that. It has elements of some of our older stuff but just kind of...better?

What do you have planned for the rest of 2021?

This year we are finding our feet again but most of all we are writing. We’re writing so much right now. We’ve recorded some more new stuff and it’s all sounding really cool. We’ve matured a lot musically and also just as people which is reflecting through all the new stuff in my opinion. We’re really finding our sound this year and excited to get some more stuff out in the near future.

What do you want people to take away from your work?

Whatever they want but hopefully something positive.

Where can we find more of your music?

On all the streaming platforms and Bandcamp. We have two other EP’s out from 2018 and 2019.
