Premiere: Crooked Colours enlist Set Mo to remix Never Dance Alone

Over the last twelve months particularly, Crooked Colours and Set Mo have both stepped up as front-runners in the Australian electronic circuit, filling in a large space left by the handful of former-heavyweights who have since picked up and left to the US - think along the lines of RÜFÜS DU SOL, for example. The former, Perth ex-pats Crooked Colours, shared Langata - a hook-dominated and sound-defining second record that showcased their strengths as a group after Vera's genre-bending versatility. The latter, meanwhile, capped twelve months of consistent A-grade single releases with their debut album Surrender, which paired some of Australia's best vocalists - Asta, Woodes, Thandi Phoenix among them - with clanging productions that ranged from subtle house-pop to thick tech.

Now, they come together - sorta - as Set Mo jump on remix duties for Crooked Colours, taking on their Ladyhawke-assisted album highlight Never Dance Alone. While the original floats with this sparse, hook-intuned electro-pop sound, Set Mo's remix deepens the productions and makes it more suited for those late-night, sweaty dancefloors, largely by adding thick bass rhythms and crisp percussion underneath Crooked Colours and Ladyhawke's dueting vocal. "After hearing Never Dance Alone for the first time we knew we’d be able to work those amazing vocals from Phil and Ladyhawke into a club-ready weapon," says Set Mo on the remix, which comes following a stand-out Splendour In The Grass 2019 performance. "We wanted to get a little cheeky with this one so went for a bouncier bassline then we’d normally opt for. We then chopped and screwed the vocals in as many different ways as possible and in true Set Mo style had that big build drop into some tasty piano stabs. We hope this remix will get you dancing (alone or otherwise)."
