Meet Sunday, a new project from Miami Horror's Aaron Shanahan

It's been a while since we last heard the poolside sounds of Miami Horror in recording, with the Melbourne four-piece being relatively quiet on the release front since releasing their The Shapes EP over a year ago now. That said, there's been the odd solo release from members past and present, the latest of which being ex-guitarist/vocalist/co-producer Aaron Shanahan, who today launches a new project called Sunday with the Sweat It Out crew. The project launch comes with its first official single, All Of The Time, and the announcement of his first EP Kintsugi, which will arrive later in the year.

All Of The Time is a breezy and laid-back number, combining washed-out psych-electronic melodies with these hazy vocals reminiscent of Tame Impala's Kevin Parker - a far stretch from the upbeat electro-pop sounds of his former band. "All Of The Time comes from a very vulnerable and genuine place," he says on the single. "It looks at a time in my life where I was into the idea of someone more than the reality. It is intentionally ambiguous and open to interpretation so that people can take this song and make it their own." Tell us about yourself?

My name is Aaron Shanahan. I am an Australian living in Berlin. I like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Karl Pilkington.

What’s the vibe music-wise?

“Sunday” is an electronic singer-songwriter project that aims to be dreamy and warm, while touching on melancholy. I aim to make something genuine and vulnerable to embrace and release deeper emotions and feelings.

What are your production and writing processes like?

My process is different to how I created in the past. I allow the songs to write themselves by letting inspiration create the energy and push for the songs without judgement. I then allow my body to make decisions on what parts stay or how the songs are crafted. The “cringe” factor is enough to guide me, and it has made for a more enjoyable and freeing process. I really enjoy creating a little world in each song.

Can you tell us about your new single, All Of The Time?

All Of The Time is about hope and lose in a relationship. What that relationship is I will leave to others to own. I can say that it explores my experiences with wanting something to work and be as you have projected. Sometimes you can be more in love with an “idea” of someone or something more than what actually is.

You were also known as a crucial part of the Miami Horror project. How does your solo project differ?

As with any solo project, there is a higher chance that it will be more personal and purer in potency to an individual’s experience and emotions. I would say with Sunday I am delving deeper into the raw of my personal experiences. Sunday is a chance to explore the dark and light in greater depths, while playing with sounds that I find exciting in electronic music.

Any shows coming up?

I am currently rehearsing a live incarnation of Sunday for a debut performance to launch the upcoming EP with Sweat It Out. We will play in Berlin with a show I am making with synchronised visuals and lights that will aim at creating a dreamy experience for those who come.

What’s the rest of the year have in store for you?

I am working on new Sunday material that is going further down the path I am exploring, but with a Berlin twist. We are planning a tour of Europe and South America.

I am also working on a dream wave band that will be playing soon, along with its first single.
