Introducing Royal And The Southern Echo, and his new single Hunt Your Love Down

Royal And The Southern Echo has had a busy year, including shows like the Mountain Goat Valley Crawl, The Blurst Of Times Festival and BIGSOUND. He's just released a new single in Hunt Your Love Down, and we figure now's a good a time as any to get to know the fella better - check it below:

Tell us about about yourself?

I’m a whiney man-child outta Brisbane who sings songs about the mild lunacy of my life and the people that breeze on through it. Honestly I’m just trying to not smoke too many cigarettes and tell a good story.

What kinda tunes we talkin’?

Singer-songwriter has been thrown around a bit, crooner even – but I like to think of it as a piña colada in the afternoon sun made with a dash of heartbreak and a touch of nostalgia.

Production/writing process:

It either starts with me foolin’ around with a guitar, piano, that kind of thing or with a certain phrase I like the sound of. Once there is something there either musically or lyrically that I feel myself holding onto, I will pretty much write the whole thing while smoking too many cigarettes. For this E.P. I worked with Miro Mackie out of the Plutonium, and it was an incredible experience taking the bones of the songs and adding layers and moments to them until they fully felt ‘done’. He’s got a brilliant mind, and it was so nice to have someone to bounce off of and help me create the widescreen noises I could hear in my head.

Can you tell us about your new single, Hunt Your Love Down?

Oh boy. This one I wrote in one sitting with the third, maybe second worst hangover of my life. The night before I had thrown a dinner party to win back the affections of my eternally off-and-on again partner (seriously, how did I think that was a good idea? I can’t even cook well). I think I was trying to prove I could be an adult, ‘cause that’s what adults do – throw dinner parties. Anyways it was going well until everyone had far too much wine, one of my friends had an argument with one of hers, then we all had a fantastic wine-minded argument and the whole evening disintegrated. So in answer to your question, no it didn’t work out – but I got the song out of it, so I’m chalking it up as a win.

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

I’m gonna try to not smoke too many cigarettes, up my piña colada intake, throw some shapes at some shows and think about putting out my debut E.P. All I can say for sure is that I’m not hosting any dinner parties soon.
