Part of Queensland Music Festival, Immersion is a boutique and intimate concert series where artists perform in hotel rooms. Here we grabbed some of those taking part to get their thoughts on performing in hotels and just what they’ve pilfered from a room.

Have you ever played a gig as intimate as the Immersion series?
No! Nothing as intimate as this, which is why we're so excited to experience this.
Are you always on the lookout to play different types of shows like the Immersion series?
Absolutely! I feel like it's super important for us to grow as a band by putting ourselves in situations we wouldn't usually pick for us. It'll be nice to look back and say we've done a variety of different gigs.
Do you think you'll play a similar set for the Immersion show to what you would in a regular music venue?
For Immersion we'll be stripping things back a little more than usual. For our live shows we like to have lots of energy and get people dancing but to make this a little more intimate we'll be simmering things down.
When you tour, do you always stay in hotels? Or are friends'/relatives' couches more your preferred style?
We've tried two very different styles so far. The first one being very nice Airbnbs and the second one being friends' houses which was so lovely and helpful! It usually depends on how much time we have in each city.
Have you ever indulged in the rock'n'roll lifestyle in a hotel room by trashing it or throwing a TV out the window or the like?
Absolutely not! Not our style! We're usually a bit too boring on tour to get up to any of that.
Have you ever nicked anything from a hotel room?
We haven't necessarily nicked anything... But we have gone wild on the tea selection in our Airbnb once. We're a pretty crazy band. It's pretty exhausting.

Have you ever played a gig as intimate as the Immersion series?
I've never done something quite so intimate like the Immersion series. The most intimate shows for me have always been house concerts!
Are you always on the lookout to play different types of shows like the Immersion series?
Yeah, I think it's really great to play and experience different ways of connecting with people through song in different environments. Maybe I'll never play a stage again after Immersion and just play in bedrooms?
Do you think you'll play a similar set for the Immersion show to what you would in a regular music venue?
I'll be playing a lot of new songs that I've written in the last six months. They're very personal and intimate and were written in my bedroom. So playing them to other people in a bedroom kinda makes sense!
When you tour, do you always stay in hotels? Or are friends'/relatives' couches more your preferred style?
I love finding nice Airbnbs to stay in. Otherwise I'll stay with friends and family on tour. Either way, it's nice to have a homely experience.
Have you ever indulged in the rock'n'roll lifestyle in a hotel room by trashing it or throwing a TV out the window or the like?
Throwing TVs out of windows is a strong tradition on tour for me. Haha no, but I have snuck in my friends to a free buffet at a hotel once. Does that count as rock'n'roll?
Have you ever nicked anything from a hotel room?
Always shampoo. There's never anything else practical to steal. Hopefully next time?

Have you ever played a gig as intimate as the Immersion series?
Yes, I've played a beautiful gig called Folk In A Box over in the UK. It's one song, [performing] to one person at a time in a little wooden box. It was a scary, lovely, amazing experience.
Are you always on the lookout to play different types of shows like the Immersion series?
In a world where we are all totally stimulated at all times, music seems just like wallpaper to many people. Any opportunity to foster a real connection between a listener and a song is ok in my book.
Do you think you'll play a similar set for the Immersion show to what you would in a regular music venue?
I think I'll get into the room, see how it feels and go with that. You can't plan things out too much in a space that intimate – everyone in the room will be a part of the performance.
When you tour, do you always stay in hotels? Or are friends'/relatives' couches more your preferred style?
These days I mostly stay in hotels, but for about four years when I first started touring it was pretty much exclusively couches, living room floors, tents in the backyard, even the occasional snooze in the car.
Have you ever indulged in the rock'n'roll lifestyle in a hotel room by trashing it or throwing a TV out the window or the like?
Nope. I would never do anything so wasteful and inconsiderate.
Have you ever nicked anything from a hotel room?
If the shampoo and conditioner is good I take that with me – and sometime I pack those little biscuits they give you... That's not really "nicking" though, is it? I guess I'm just a boring-old non-thief…

Have you ever played a gig as intimate as the Immersion series?
Yes, I have at the Folk Alliance International Conference in Kansas and in Montreal.
Are you always on the lookout to play different types of shows like the Immersion series?
I think it’s awesome to have a variety of shows for the experience.
Do you think you'll play a similar set for the Immersion show to what you would in a regular music venue?
I’ll probably just play an acoustic set seeing as it’s going to be very intimate. I like my live acoustic sets because the listeners can actually connect more with the lyrics and what I’m saying.
When you tour, do you always stay in hotels? Or are friends'/relatives' couches more your preferred style?
I do stay in hotels, but I do prefer sometimes staying with friends – but then again when you’re on the road a lot it’s nice to have your own space.
Have you ever indulged in the rock'n'roll lifestyle in a hotel room by trashing it or throwing a TV out the window or the like?
Haha, I don’t think I should talk about that, but let’s just say something along similar lines...
Have you ever nicked anything from a hotel room?
A hairdryer and a towel, oh, and a glass cup and scissors.
