Having just wrapped up a UK tour and released their new EP, we catch up with the Boorloo/Perth indie faves.
Saying Great Gable are a busy band is an understatement. Less than a year on from the release of their awesome On The Wall In The Morning Light album (that they went deep on for us here), the band toured the record all around Australia, before taking on New Zealand and recently the UK alongside The Grogans. Now their gearing up to head around the country once more supporting Matt Corby, with a few headlining W.A. shows thrown in for good measure.
And somehow, somewhere during all of this, the band managed to write and record their latest EP, Read The Room. Writing the songs while on the road touring, the band swung past Matt Corby’s Rainbow Valley studio to lay down the tracks that would become the new EP.
To celebrate the release of Read The Room and ahead of their upcoming Australian tour, we checked in with the band.

Congrats on your new EP! Love the title - something a lot of people (me included!) sometimes have a hard time doing... where does Read The Room come from in this context?
Thanks!! It’s something we all struggle with sometimes but you also find yourself thinking why can’t it be so obvious. All the messages that come from the songs can relate back to that, just moments of awareness and understanding. Which you always find yourself on both sides of.
You wrote these songs while on the road touring Australia - what impact do you think that had on the songs?
A massive impact - we wanted to bring back the raw live sound we used to do a while ago, so we bought the energy and excitement from the shows into the studio and we felt like it was translating well in there.
Did you get to road test these tracks as they were being formed while on tour?
Nah they weren’t finished enough at that point (our album tour last October), but we did test them on our tour of New Zealand in Feb and then our UK just gone. They went down well!
What was it like recording at Matt Corby’s Rainbow Valley Studio?
We’ve done a fair bit of stuff there now so it feels like our second home. Matt and the family are super welcoming and we love hanging out there. The studio itself is insane and me being a bit of a nerd for production and music gear was frothing it.
How is the new EP feeling live?
So good!! We play three of the songs in our live set at the moment and they transition well, we could easily play the other two as well - maybe once we make the set bigger. I love it.
What’s coming up for Great Gable for the second half of 2023?
We have a tour of Australia in October/November for the EP!! Big Aus tour that’s going to go off!! We’ve also got a few other things in the works – more touring, more music… keep an eye out.
What have you guys been listening to lately?
I’ve been listening to Sam Fender, Lord Huron, Beach Fossils, Wolf Alice, and The Grogans heaps on this current tour with Matt Corby.
