Despite everything the world has thrown at her this year, Maddy Jane has been quick to claim herself victorious in 2020. She came into the year off the back of two brilliant singles - Something Old and Something New and Perfection's A Thing and You're It, themselves following the release of her debut EP Not Human At All the year earlier - and with a full-length debut album under her belt, which with its release in May, ushered Maddy Jane forward as a bright, go-to light amongst Australia's indie-pop scene and the rich charm and flavour that's contained within it.
That would've been enough to lock in Maddy Jane's brilliant year, but as you could probably expect, she went above and beyond. Shortly after the arrival of her debut album Not All Bad Or Good, she shared a cover of Fleetwood Mac's timeless Dreams and covered Natasha Bedingfield's Unwritten for triple j's Like A Version; announced a litter of sold-out shows on the east-coast throughout October and November, and then, to cap off the year and look forward into the future already, she shared her first song post-debut album, in You're Not Mine (But I Think You Should Be) at the start of November.
You're Not Mine (But I Think You Should Be) is a big moment for Maddy Jane, one that feels like the musical equivalent of the victory lap around the oval after kicking the game's best goal. Written after feeling inspired by her Unwritten cover, the track is a rich indie-pop tapestry that brings together what Maddy Jane does best, singing directly from her heart as she brings aching songwriting to the surface and reflects on what's been a long, yet triumphant year for the musician.

"This song was one that was trying to tell me something," said Maddy on the song with its release. "It came together so quickly when I wrote it and recorded it in the middle of the pandemic. I spend so much time in my head coming from an insecure place and this was about realising I need to balance out those negative and insecure thoughts more often. It's about coming from a place of confidence and reminding myself that I do love myself and I've grown so much. Something that I feel like we were all forced to look at this year. After I wrote this, I looked back and felt like I just taught myself a lesson. It’s a feel-good reminder that you are awesome and are just supposed to be doing you!"
Now, she's releasing one of the best videos of the year in support of the video clip, which brings Maddy Jane together with some of Australia's most remarkable women in music - both in the limelight and behind-the-scenes - to double down on the outpouring of confidence and self-empowerment that many have needed to tap into throughout the difficult year.
The video features Maddy herself, alongside Ruby Fields, Annie Hamilton, Odette, triple j's Lucy Smith, CLEWS' Lily Richardson and I Know Leopard's Rosie Fitzgerald, all coming together for a western, rodeo-like affair as they attempt to triumph over the ol' bucking bull, with a fair bit of line dancing and the likes thrown in for good measure.
You can take a dive into the video below as it exclusively premieres on Pilerats ahead of its official release tomorrow. It's a whole lot of fun, and we promise it'll make you laugh.
