DJ Hyper plays the launch party of Sundex on August 18 at The Winery, Davies Park West End and later that night at the Berlin Bar, Gold Coast.

DJ Hyper has been flying the flag for nu-school breaks high and proud, rocking an appreciative but small crowd earlier this year at the Two Tribes Festival. He’s coming back to our shores for a quick flit around the country, stopping in Brisbane to launch Sundex, as well as playing the Berlin Bar down the Gold Coast the same night. I had a brief chat with the man just before he was getting on the plane to our sunny shores.

Your recent Bedrock Breaks mix has been a huge success; tell us a little about your residency there and how it came about?

“Terminalhead were asked to do the back room and they asked me to be a resident there with them and the rest, as they say...”

As a genre breaks has ebbed and flowed over the last couple of years; where would you say it is going and what would you regard as key things that need to happen for it to go forward?

“It's moving forward slowly (the right way). It would help if a lot of the mediocre records didn't come out and put so many people off but I guess it's inevitable with a growing scene and it's good to have people putting the effort in.”

Being from England; how would you regard the breaks scene at home?

“Ignored by major press and loved by kids going out to dance making it uncool for mainstream UK dance press (go figure!?). Musically though, it's really Healthy.”

Which other English producers would you say he been most influential in recent times ?

“On me, Hybrid, PMT, Terminalhead, Stisch...”

Of the current crop of breaks labels; which other aside from your own do you feel has contributed the most to the rebirth of breaks ?

“Acetate Ltd have breathed fresh air into this scene a lot with a number of big records!”

In the UK and abroad where are your favourite places to play and why?

“Bedrock in London, Spundae in LA are really memorable but there are so many. Zouk Singapore was fun, as was my last Oz trip!”

What have you heard about the breaks scene in Australia?

“I've seen and know that the scene over there is kicking and I can't wait to get back. The crowds are amazingly enthusiastic.”

If you were to put together an ultimate line-up for an event who would you book to play ?

“Sasha, Keith Tenniswood and Shut Up & Dance.”

Can you tell us some of your favourite records of right now and perhaps some producers we should look out for?

“Beats Rhymes Flavours - Terminalhead, Starry Eyed Surprise (Stir Fry mix) - Oakenfold, Karma Sammy - Stir Fry, Poolswinger - Stisch (Sound Of Habib), Flying – Fatliners, Where Do We Go (DJ Hyper mix) – Filter, Don't Stop (DJ Hyper Vs Stir Fry mix) - Joy Kitikanti, The Shrink – Fatliners.”

“Stir Fry is awesome. I'm biased because he is on my Kilowatt label but he has just been producing for Oakenfold and has produced and engineered for both Sasha and BT in the past also. His new Stir Fry thing is going off!”
