Here's What Coda Chroma Do To Relieve Stress

"I tend to get the scissors out and cut my fringe or something, Damien likes to hurl abuse at low flying planes."

It's a rare thing indeed when a young band draws on the music of Beethoven and Debussy for inspiration, but that's exactly what Kate Lucas and Damien Charles did for their "baroquepop, spacefolk, nostalgiapop, astralrock" duo Coda Chroma.

"We both grew up listening to great records, from The Beatles to Beethoven and everything in between," says Lucas of their origins. Lucas hails from the hem of the Great Diving Range in Gippsland, Victoria, and began her musican journey with her band Telltale, which released an EP in 2011. Meanwhile, Charles found his footing in the peaks of Titirangi, Auckland, and opened Ground Zero recording studio. He subsequently produced and engineered two studio albums with Red Eyes, as well as working with acts such as Gotye and Hiatus Kaiyote. Their single off the album (due to be released on the later end of this year) Ones & Ohs  is a product of three years of collabortation.

"I was still writing the lyrics on the day of recording. All the parts locked into place pretty quickly. Not playing it with a band first has made us feel a little freer to experiment," says Lucas.

Their influences for the track are pretty eclectic combined - "We were listening to a lot of Split Endz records, Debussy, and The Doors (in particular the song Strange Days). Playing real analogue synthesisers, instead of programming was very inspiring! Driving on the Calder Freeway past the suburbs, and the new fuzz pedal Damien got for Christmas," - as are their ways to re-group under stress "We might go outside and do star jumps. I tend to get the scissors out and cut my fringe or something, Damien likes to hurl abuse at low flying planes," says Lucas.
