"The character's an exaggerated version of myself. I play in the local footy club, play games and shit, do things people do, listen to a whole pile of music."
Alex Williamson might be one of the prettiest comics around but this young South Australian's got the pottiest mouth in town. Alex Williamson and Friends is a show celebrating the bogan behaviour and crude language made famous by Williamson's character The Loosest Australian Bloke. Williamson's popularity on the net (over 25 million YouTube views) has led him to the stage rather than the other way round. Over the last two years 'Shooter Williamson' has been consistently posting videos and now he's huuuuuge and selling out shows at comedy festivals. What does that feel like? “You forget how many people you're entertaining,” says the comic. “I live in a small town in South Australia so to come to the Melbourne comedy scene where everyone recognises me ... It's interesting.” Williamson says he's comfortable with success. “It's been a gradual process.” Is this what he planned for himself? “Sort of,” he answers. “I always wanted to be a film maker. I was inspired by some comedians, sketches, characters, plays and music.” Williamson does have world-wide ambitions for the Loosest Bloke. “I'm trying to get the global appeal going. In the US and the UK, everyone loves to see a really Aussie bloke. It goes back to Crocodile Dundee, Barry McKenzie and all that.”
Williamson's show showcases his musical and performance skills via a variety of media with a guitarist and a pianiston stage as well as the man himself on keyboards. “There's a video of mine (Festie Heads) that isn't on You Tube.” He reckons his appeal comes from his character – The Loosest Aussie Bloke – being so easily identifiable. “The character's an exaggerated version of myself. I play in the local footy club, play games and shit, do things people do, listen to a whole pile of music. He's kind of one of us. People can relate.” Williamson also reckons that honesty plays a big part in making him funny “I've learnt to keep my mouth shut for a bit to give a space for something to really resonate. If there's something I find funny and my friends find funny then I'll do it. The Loosest Aussie Bloke is lighthearted but there's also edgy, dark humour there.” Besides making people laugh, Williamson sees himself as a promoter of free speech (does getting audiences to yell out 'c***face' in unison count?) and recognises the opportunities offered by his massive following on Twitter. The world is loving this boy behaving badly and naturally Williamson's having a blast. All right for some c***s.
Alex Williamson will perform at The Tivoli on Saturday 19 October.
