"The darkest material The Black Angels have ever recorded, and the most political they've ever been."
"It’s no entrée, but it’s certainly not a main course."
Playing in a venue that hosts various bands and club nights on the regular, The Black Angels made us feel as though we had spent the last few hours on a journey to another era, and upon leaving the venue on a crisp winter’s evening, I was back to reality.
Two-plus hours and one encore later, and The Black Angels’ track record remains resolutely intact.
Black Isn’t Black closes the encore, complete with projections of a trampolinist. With the lyrics “Placed on this planet, darkness at the door” hanging in the air, the audience dopily exits into the clear night air.
“We felt that after (third album) Phosphene Dream we had brought in influences that really appealed to us, and we wanted to push that further, but also integrate it with our past to make something fairly seamless."
Ever wondered what their soundcheck would be like?
We don't know what the fuck is going on here.
Exploring a different facet of the psychedelic ‘60s this time around, The Black Angels still take us on quite a trip.
